What is a Smörgåstårta / Sandwich cake ?

Favourite Fillings and general information about a classic Swedish Sandwich cake

Handcrafted with love and great for large gatherings - a layered savoury cake.


Yes! With layers of a mix of dark rye bread and fresh white loafs and delicious creamy fillings creates a texture and shape of a savoury cake with delicate flavours.

All our cakes have two layers of filling. It is not unusual or wrong to mix seafood and meat inside the cake, as well as topping on the cake. However, by far the most popular is the cake with full focus on seafood. 


Filling example could be seafood sticks, dill and boiled egg with mayonnaise , sour cream or yogurt 

The second filling could be with tuna, mayonnaise , pickles, spring onion and cheese.


If a cake is ordered with meat filling very popular are following, H

Ham/salami, cheese, spices and some sort of creamy texture such as yogurt , sour cream or mayonnaise

Second filling would be comlitmented with something along cream cheese, pickles, liver pate and fresh green sprouts.

Sometimes the cake needs to be free from pork, then I often use 

Chicken salad mix with smooth mayo and curry spice followed with feta cheese, sun-dried tomatoes, avocado and harissa

If the cake needs to be vegetarian I use ingredient suitable for the order, likewise if the cake needs to be gluten-free, lactose free or egg free. 

In short, every combination is possible. If the cake are made free from gluten or free from lactose, the cost increase slightly, pending on the size of the cake.

When taking a sandwich cake order from a customer, my normal question is, “is there anything you don’t wish to have on the cake?” Funny is that coriander seem to be the most common answer, stay safe you coriander haters out there as dill is the main herb in Swedish cooking. 

If you are considering order a cake for people you do not know if they have an allergy of any kind, you can always order two cakes. Lets say you cater for 30 people, you order one with meat , one with seafood. , could be 15 + 15  in size or , if the crowd is Swedish , I would recommend 20 + 10 in the favour of seafood. 

The topping of the cake is always reflecting the fillings. On seafood cake we often use prawns, salmon, caviar to decorate with. For a meat filled cake we othen use ham, cheeses, roastbeef. Everything in combination is a part of the beauty of making a Swedish Sandwich Cake , even fruit is not too uncommon to add on top of a cake. 


All cakes are fresh made to order and the ingredients are Australian produce, prepared and cooked with Swedish methods and flavours. The minimum size that we make are for 6 people.
